It's time for Democratic Party Senators to make a stand:
WASHINGTON -- The Senate wades into an election-year debate Friday over whether to write into the Constitution that "marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman."Here's an idea for the Democratic Party Senators. Skip the debate. Don't even get involved in it. Give the GOP a partisan forum for showing America how small minded and bigoted they truly are. There's no need to provide a counterpoint. None.
Its strongest proponents say a constitutional amendment is the only way to prevent federal courts from hearing cases that challenge a federal law disallowing same-sex unions. With such an amendment, they say, a court wouldn't be able to rule that gay marriage is legal.
"Some would define this as the ultimate culture battle," said Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kansas.
It's time to smash the fundie block of votes in congress. Take a page out of Kerry's playbook. Just shut up and let them expose themselves.
And here's an idea when / if such an amendment comes to a vote: Every one of the Democratic Party Senators should abstain from voting. Or be absent. Not only would such an action deny the 2/3 majority needed to propose such an amendment, it would send a heck of a message.
