How Beauteous...

"How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world, that has such people in't!"
(Miranda, from Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’, Act V)

The Gates, Central Park - Artists'Statement:
" As Christo and Jeanne-Claude have always done for their previous projects, The Gates will be entirely financed by the artists through C.V.J. Corp, (Jeanne-Claude Javacheff, President) with the sale of studies, preparatory drawings and collages, scale models, earlier works of the fifties and sixties, and original lithographs on other subjects. The artists do not accept sponsorship or donations."

Oxycontin Boy was blowharding on the radio this morning in his same old nauseating way about how stupid he thought The Gates were, and how the "liberals" in NYC who are all agog about it are, of course, demented. It's to be expected, I suppose. Rabid anti-intellectualism and the lack of a gene to appreciate radical art seems to go hand-in-hand. I also read just recently that people are up in arms about the money spent on the project that might have better helped the suffering tsunami victims. I don't think we need to give up art in order to act generously and humanely.

Then, there's this. Brave New World: Soma, Shakespeare, and Suicide: The Terrors of Techno Utopia

I haven't much time this morning, but wanted to share my morning Happy Planet slice with you.
