Geffen Says "No" to Hillary

But this isn't news. I know of zero progressives, liberals or Democrats who think Hillary Clinton will make a good candidate for President in 2008. Still, she evidently remains a spectre for the Republicans to fear.

Now I don't blame a gossip columnist in the New York Daily News for getting all excited by this little item. And I note it is buried in his column as well, meaning, even though Hillary is a Senator in that state, Geffen's remarks didn't stir Lloyd Grove all that much.
Friends no more? I hope Sen. Hillary Clinton isn't counting on help from Hollywood mogul David Geffen in her possible run for the White House in 2008. Geffen, a generous supporter and pal of Bill Clinton when he was President, trashed Hillary's prospects last night during a Q&A at the 92nd St. Y. "She can't win, and she's an incredibly polarizing figure," the billionaire Democrat told his audience. "And ambition is just not a good enough reason." Geffen's dis was met with hearty applause.

Perhaps Grove isn't stirred about the story because he understands that Hillary doesn't really have a whole lot of groundswell support. Geffen is exactly right -- she is too polarizing to run, even if that polarizing is irrational on the part of the right wingnuts. What is also irrational is how they treat the story, as evidenced by that right wingnut Matt Drudge's panicky headline of a story lifted word for word from Grove's column:

GEFFEN UNLOADS ON HILLARY: 'SHE CAN'T WIN'

Sen. Hillary Clinton should not count on help from Hollywood mogul David Geffen in her possible run for the White House.

Geffen, who was a generous supporter and pal of Bill Clinton when he was president, trashed Hillary's prospects last night during a Q&A at the 92nd St. Y in New York City.

"She can't win, and she's an incredibly polarizing figure," the billionaire Democrat told his audience. "And ambition is just not a good enough reason."

Lloyd Grove reports in fresh editions of the NY DAILY NEWS the audience broke with "hearty applause" over Geffen's comments.

As Matt Drudge is wont to say when he reports, "developing. . . " But this isn't developing anywhere except in the feverish minds of those on the right.

Want to bet this is featured on Limbaugh, Hannity and O'Reilly today? I'd say the odds are pretty high that they'll follow Drudge's panicky lead in lockstep.
