Sucky Link

...for a Sunday, but I'm going to post it anyway. If you've never been to Fallujah In Pictures, it's sobering. In the space of a few short weeks, the site has evolved from a portfolio of images shot during the U.S. assault on Fallujah, to a catalog of the war in all parts of Iraq.

Most Americans will never see these pictures. That the images on the site aren't being broadcast nightly on the news is one reason that the travesty in Iraq is still raging. It can be argued that the Vietnam war (eventually) evoked such a primal scream from Main Street America because of the pictures and film being sent back stateside daily, and then shown on the evening news.

Uncensored images from the battle zone bring the reality of war closer to us, even from half a world away. A reporter's recitation of the latest Pentagon news release from a hotel lounge in the Baghdad green zone does not.

Here's an interesting exchange that took place in the comment section of Fallujah in Pictures this past Friday:

Every fallen MNF or ING soldier is a hero who has contributed to the building of new democratic Iraq and shall be commemorated and celebrated by future generations. Not one drop of their blood will have been spilt in vain. True freedom has never come cheaply. And despite the beheaders, saddamists and other enemies of the Decent Iraqi Majority, New Democratic Iraq shall become a reality sooner or later. Only then is the time for foreign troops to leave Iraq having helped Iraqis to finally emerge proudly after decades of shameful existence under tyranny.

Rome wasn't built in a day.

Rome didn't fall in a day, either. This looks more like the fall of Rome, rather than the building of it.
Indeed.
