A Reason to Oppose ANWR Drilling

For the past couple of months, when anyone brings up the subject of drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), my reaction has been, "Feh. Let'em turn the whole flippin' state of Alaska into one big oil derrick." My reason for holding this opinion has been that Alaskans knew fully well what the deal was if TeamBush was re-selected on 11/2/04, yet they still voted overwhelmingly for the rape of ANWR. So, drill, baby, drill. The people have spoken. (Sidebar: interestingly enough, even the major oil companies have now turned cool to the idea. Proven reserves simply aren't there to justify the expenditures, and with the moneymen it's always about, well, money.)

A pointer from DailyKos this morning to an article from the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner has changed my mind. If the ANWR proposal doesn't go through, Alaska GOP Senator Ted Stevens has threatened to retire.

I am now officially opposed to opening up ANWR for drilling.
